Uglich

Uglich - City with a mysterious past
Uglich was first officially mentioned in records in 1148 but gained historical notoriety during the 16th century in connection with the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of Ivan IV's youngest son. At the time, Prince Dimitri was living with his mother in the Uglich Kremlin. He was next in line to succeed his brother Fyodor who was under the patronage of Boris Godunov. Rumour has it that Godunov made several attempts on Dimitri's life. An investigation in to Dimitri's death reported he had fallen and fatally injured himself whilst playing - the truth will never be known. In reaction to his death, the citizens of Uglich revolted and 200 were beheaded and 5000 were banished to Siberia !
